For guests coming to Blair House Inn via Maine we still recommend taking the Ferry Point bridge located in downtown Calais and St. Stephen. The downtown route is only 5.6 km to Blair House Inn compared to 11.8 km via the new (third) bridge over the St. Croix river. (Distances are measured from a mini roundabout (rotary/traffic circle) located on the outskirt of Calais when coming from Bangor via Route 9). The downtown route also offers guests the opportunity to get gas, dine at some fine restaurants and stop at the duty-free store before crossing the border.

The long-awaited new bridge over the St. Croix river at St. Stephen, New Brunswick and Calais, Maine opens today at 10:00 a.m. (Atlantic time). This is the first new border crossing between Canada and the United States in over 60 years. The two existing bridges will remain open - the Ferry Point bridge located downtown and the Milltown bridge located 1.5 miles up-river. The new bridge is a half mile above the Milltown bridge. All truck traffic has to take the new bridge but car traffic can choose any bridge; though for getting gas, restaurants and visiting the Chocolate Museum the downtown Ferry Point bridge is your best bet.

Passport deadline fast approaching - June 1st 2009

June 1st 2009 - The date is fast approaching for when travelers crossing the US/Canada border by land will require either a passport or NEXUS card as proof of identification. After June 1st, a drivers licence and birth certificate will no longer be enough.

Last weekend we added a two-stage water filtration process to all the water coming in to the house. Guests have already commented on the improved taste of our drinking water and staff love how it has helped in cleaning.

Canadian Affair, the UK’s largest tour operator to Canada, will next week commence the first ever direct service to Fredericton, New Brunswick, Canada.

The direct weekly service from London Gatwick, which commences on Tuesday 6th May, will give travellers greater access not only to New Brunswick, but also the three Atlantic Coast Provinces of Prince Edward Island, Newfoundland & Labrador, and Nova Scotia. Free swimming in St. Stephen this Summer

St. Stephen town council voted recently to remove the $2. daily fee previously charged for using the Town’s two outdoor public swimming pools. Now residents and visitors alike can cool-off for free this Summer! The nearest pool, next to the Middle School on Marks Street, is a 10-minute walk from Blair House and the W.T. Booth Centenial pool, new in 2007, is just a 5-minute drive to the Milltown Elementary School, off Milltown Boulevard.

St. George’s Day 14th Century dinner & dance

April 23rd is St. George’s Day. St. George is the patron saint of England, the Town of St. George, New Brunswick and numerous other locations around the world. In celebration of St. George’s Day the St. George Curling Club is hosting the 4th Annual St. George’s Day 14th Century Dinner & Dance. Groundbreaking ceremony to start new U.S. border inspection building

On Saturday, April 19th a ceremony was held to officially commence construction of a new U.S. Land Port of Entry for Calais, Maine. The new $48.3 million facility will be built next to the new third bridge on the outskirt of Calais. The new international bridge across the St. Croix river is already under-construction and should be completed later this Fall. The new U.S. building is expected to be completed by November 2009. Many dignitaries from both Canada and the USA were present for the groundbreaking including Senator Susan Collins (Maine) and Charlotte-Campobello MLA Tony Huntjens.

Calais - St. Stephen is the 8th busiest border crossing between Canada and the USA. By 2030 it is projected that 2,000 truck per day will cross the new bridge.

Civic Centre receives major donation from former resident

The Charlotte County Civic Centre project just received a major donation from a former resident of St. Stephen-Milltown now working in Vancouver, B.C. Robert Quartermain, president, Silver Standard Resources gave $172,724. towards the proposed $15 million regional project. Robert Quartermain is quoted as saying ” I believe that I am who I am today due in large part to the life and opportunities I enjoyed in my early years growing up and learning about life in St. Stephen.
