The Charlotte County Civic Centre project just received a major donation from a former resident of St. Stephen-Milltown now working in Vancouver, B.C. Robert Quartermain, president, Silver Standard Resources gave $172,724. towards the proposed $15 million regional project. Robert Quartermain is quoted as saying ” I believe that I am who I am today due in large part to the life and opportunities I enjoyed in my early years growing up and learning about life in St. Stephen. The Charlotte County Civic Centre committee officially launched the $3.5 million fundraising campaign yesterday here in St. Stephen. The campaign’s honorary co-chairpersons are David and Diane Ganong. They announced that $1.2 million has already been raised from large corporate and private donations towards the $15 million community project. According to project president Richard Fulton the civic centre could be operational by 2012. (more…)

It is a sure sign that Spring has arrived in Charlotte County when Scoops ice-cream parlour opens for the season just down the street from Blair House in St. Stephen. A wide selection of flavours at a great price. Next week in the St. George area on highway Route #1 the reknowned Ozzie’s Lunch take-out will also re-open for the Summer season. Mmmmm.

Downtown St. Stephen’s Chocolate Museum located in the old Ganong chocolate factory recently announced plans for expansion to it’s displays and services offered to visitors. One of the major changes is the move of all the ‘hand-dipping’ chocolate production from the existing Ganong factory on Chocolate Drive back to the old factory on Milltown Boulevard. In the future, visitors will be able to watch the skilled hand-dippers creating the chocolates then buy them in the museum and store next door. Funding and assistance for the new expansion has come from federal, provincial and municipal governments and Ganong Brothers Ltd. (more…)

I don’t remember the last time that school was cancelled in April due to a snow storm. But that’s what happened Thursday, April 5th. Here in southwestern New Brunswick the snow didn’t start falling until dawn but when it came it really came down heavily. Big heavy snow flakes. But mild. The temperature was hovering just below the freezing mark and the forecast called for it to change to rain later on. (more…)
