Latest update on new third bridge

Filed under: General News, New 3rd Bridge & Crossing the Border — David @ 12:01 am

The latest news on construction of the new third bridge across the international St. Croix river was provided Thursday evening by both American and Canadian government officials. The public meeting was held at the Milltown Legion in St. Stephen, N.B. September 2008 was the original completion date. The bridge, approach roads on both sides of the border and the Canada Customs inspection buildings are still expected to be completed by that date. The U$43 million United States customs and inspection facilities are delayed but officials hope to have the truck inspection area operational by January 2009. No date is available yet for completion of inspection facilities for car traffic on the American side. Early opening of the truck area at the new bridge should alleviate line-ups in downtown St. Stephen and Calais, Maine starting in early 2009. U$65.3 million has been secured from U.S. federal sources to build the inspection facility and bridge on the Maine side of the international border.
