Bisons lose in OT

MIRAMICHI - The St. Stephen Flakeboard Bisons made the New Brunswick Midget ‘B’ Provincial Championship game recently in Miramichi.
The Bisons got to the championship game by posting a perfect 5-0 record in round-robin play and had the best goal average amongst the six-team Midget ‘B’ division.
The Midget AA, A and B Provincial Championships were hosted in Miramichi although the Bisons played four of their six games in the hometown of Baie-Ste-Anne, a 35-minute drive from Miramichi.
In the five-game round robin the Bisons scored 20 goals and only conceded nine despite being outshot 158 - 145. In Sunday’s championship final the Bisons met the Grand-Sault/Falls team again. In three previous playoff games the Bisons shared a 1-1-1 record with Grand Falls and had narrowly beaten them 3 - 2 in round robin play Friday morning.
In Sunday’s final, Grand Falls opened the scoring on the first shift but St. Stephen came back to tie the game in the first on a power play goal by Kyle Wiggins.
In the second period Grand Falls outshot the Bisons 20-4 and went into the final period with a 2-1 lead. The Bisons had a much stronger third period and despite being outshot 12-5 capitalized on their opportunities with Bubby McLaughlin scoring another powerplay goal to tie the game 2-2 after three.
Six minutes in to overtime Grand Falls finally sneaked the game-winning goal on a long-shot from just inside the blue line.
Throughout the six-game tournament St. Stephen’s goalie Jeremy Leslie made 196 saves - (94 per cent). Tournament goal scorers for St. Stephen were Cody Boucher (6), Justin McDougall (3), Cal Laking (3), Bubby McLaughlin (2), Kyle Wiggins (2), Dillon Donahue (2), Jeff Brown (2), Nathan Stewart (1), and Tyler Belyea (2).
The St. Stephen Bisons team members at the Midget ‘B’ provincial championships were goalie Jeremy Leslie, forwards Nathan Stewart, Bubby McLaughlin, Kyle Wiggins, Linton Mitchell, Cal Laking, Cody Boucher, Justin McDougall, defencemen Dillon Donahue, Jason Deveau, Gareth Whittingham, Andrew Quartermain, Tyler Belyea and Pat Beck.
Affiliated players who helped the team get to the Provincials and record such an impressive record at the championships were forwards Ian Covey, Mike Gullison, Alistair Covey and Jeff Brown.
Team members who were unable to play at the championships due to injury were Cody Getchell and Josh Forster. Head coach was Terry Stewart, assisted by John Beck and Tim Belyea.
